Women’s Golf Finishes First at Cougar Classic


The William Woods University women’s golf team claimed its third first place finish of the fall on Tuesday when they won the Cougar Classic hosted at the Columbia Country Club. The Owls finished the tournament 44-over par 628 (309-319).

Following behind the Owls was Columbia College, who finished at 117-over par 701 (342-359). Missouri Baptist finished in third place with a score of 136-over par 720 (353-367). For full team and individual results, click here.

Leading the way for the Owls in the second round was Megan Cullen. Cullen shot even par 73 in the second-round tying for the victory. She finished the tournament with a score of eight-over par 154 (81-73). Cullen finished tied for first with teammate, Katie Warren. After shooting even-par in the first round, Warren shot eight over par 81 in the second round. She finished eight-over par 154 (73-81).

Fumika Matsumoto finished third at the tournament, four shots behind Cullen and Warren. Matsumoto shot six-over par 79 in the second round. She was 12-over par 158 (79-79) for her two rounds. Following Matsumoto was Lucy Matthews. Matthews finished with a score of 16-over par 162 (76-86). She shot 13-over par 86 in the second round. Matthews carded a hole in one for the Owls on hole 11.

Rounding out the Owls team was Nikki Callahan. Callahan shot 17-over par 90 in the second round and was 30-over par 176 (86-90) for the two-day tournament. She finished in 13th place.

Golfing as individuals, were Maylie HoltKelsey Moreland and Bayley Henke. Holt earned her second top ten finish of the season as she finished tied for ninth at the Cougar Classic. She shot 27-over par 173 (85-88). Moreland improved four spots in the final round as she shot 13-over par 86. Moreland finished tied for 11th with a score of 29-over par 175 (89-86). Henke, also improved four spots in the final round, as she shot 15-over par 88. She concluded the tournament with a score of 34-over par 180 (92-88) finishing in 16th place.

WWU returns to action on Monday, October 9th when they host the WWU Fall Invite at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton, Missouri.
