Cole Hammer, of Houston, TX, toured historic Northwood Club in Dallas (site of the 1952 US Open) last Monday in the sectional qualifying for the US Open with rounds of 64-68 to get one of the six spots available in Dallas. That’s not the big news, though. Hammer, who won’t turn 16 until this August, became the third youngest qualifier EVER (behind Andy Zhang in 2012 and Tadd Fujikawa in 2006) with his 132 total, and has a 9:12 tee time Thursday off #10 at Chambers Bay.
Young Columbia, MO resident Matt Echelmeier made the sectional field because of his good play in the “local” qualifier, but did not get one of the 10 spots available in the Memphis qualifier. Matt helped lead Rock Bridge HS to the class 4 Missouri state golf title this year, and is headed to the Univ. of Missouri as one of Coach Mark LeRoux’s 2015 recruits. He will join his brother Will on the Mizzou golf team this fall and next year.
The USGA held 10 sectional qualifiers last Monday and welcomed 56 qualifiers into the Open field by virtue of their play at those sites around the US.
We count 16 amateurs in the 2015 Open field, including the 2014 US Amateur champion Gunn Yang of Korea. Yang will be playing in the traditional pairing Thursday and Friday with 2014 US Open winner Martin Kaymer and British Open champion Rory McIlroy.
