Bryan Norton of Mission Hills, KS and Mission Hills CC advanced to today’s finals of the US Senior Amateur at Big Canyon CC in Newport Beach, CA with a pair of tough 2 & 1 wins yesterday. Norton will play Patrick Tallent of Vienna, VA, the 2010 Senior Am runner-up, at 8:30 PDT this morning.
Norton has made news this week because he has not taken a cart while playing the hilly Big Canyon layout. “I just don’t play well when using a cart,” he said. He has relied on good friend Patrick Schriver to caddy for him this week as he negotiates Big Canyon. Norton was pleased to learn that two-time Senior Amateur champion Kemp Richardson won his titles while walking, as well. (Richardson won his first title in 2001 at Norwood Hills CC in St. Louis.) Norton, 55, won his third Kansas Amateur title earlier this summer at Mission Hills CC, his home course.
Bryan hopes this second trip to a USGA championship final turns out better than his last in 2003 at the US Mid-Amateur. In that final, Norton was forced to default to Nathan Smith after pulling a calf muscle while hitting a shot from a difficult stance.
Norton will represent Kansas at the upcoming US State Team championship at French Lick Resort in Indiana September 30-October 2.
