US Women’s Mid-Amateur Qualifier
Before the men mid-ams teed off Tuesday, August 5 at Annbriar GC, seven women mid-amateurs went off in search of two spots into the national field at the US Women’s Mid-Amateur September 6-11 at Harbour Trees GC in Noblesville, IN.
Alisha Mathews of St. Louis and Dee Johnson of Perryville advanced to the national event, though they certainly did it in different ways! Mathews got off to a rough start on the front nine but shot a steady 38 on the back on the strength of seven consecutive pars starting at the 12th and a round of 81. Johnson had the qualifying medal firmly in her grasp with a five-over-par total through 17 holes. However, she made a mess of the par-five 18th with a double par 10 and probably thought her qualifying chances were done. But her 82 was good enough to nip Deidre Robertson by two and grab the second spot.
Mathews qualified for the US Women’s Amateur Public Links earlier this summer, but missed the cut into match play at the event held at The Home Course in Dupont, WA.
