William Woods No. 3 In NAIA Golf Top 25 Poll


KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The third edition of the NAIA Men’s Golf Coaches’ Top 25 Poll was released today and the William Woods University men’s golf team comes in at No. 3.

WWU drops one spot from the previous poll, as they totaled 324 points. Coastal Georgia overtakes the No. 1 spot, earning nine first place votes and 339 points. Oklahoma City is sitting at No. 2, with 334 points and four first place votes, while behind WWU, British Columbia and Cal State San Marcos, round out the top five.

The Owls are coming off an impressive showing at the William Woods University Spring Invitational in its last time out, as they won the event, after scoring an 8-under par 568 (287-281).

Will Rushworth, the reigning American Midwest Conference and NAIA National Men’s Golfer of the Week, shot a tournament record 10-under par 134 (67-67) at Tanglewood Golf Course, for the victory.

Sophomore Billy McKenzie ended up in second place, as he scored a 6-under par 138 (69-69), while David Houlding (73-68), Mark Martin (68-73) and Julian Taylor (69-72), tied for third, as they shot a 3-under par 141.

On the year, in 18.0 rounds played, the Owls have an average score of 72.20 and a versus par score of +0.92, which are both second best in the NAIA. The team has also hit 259 birdies and four eagles thus far.

Houlding, a Leeds, England, native, has the best average score in the NAIA, at 71.11, while totaling 53 birdies and two eagles. McKenzie, has moved up to fourth with an average score of 71.50, while senior transfer, Stan Gautier, has an average score of 72.72, placing him 23rd overall in the nation.

Freshman, Alasdair McDougall, has also jumped up three spots to 43rd in average scoring (73.44), but has totaled 36 birdies in 16.0 rounds played.

The Owls will look for its third consecutive win on the course on April 20th and 21st, as they will participate in the BEU/Mussatto Invitational in Macomb, Illinois.
