The William Woods University men’s golf team, sponsored by Fulton Medical Center, earned a fourth-place finish at the 2017 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship. The Owls shot 84-over par 1220 (297-315-292-316) over the four rounds.
This is the fourth straight season the Owls have finished the NAIA National Championship with a top five finish.
Leading the Owls at the 2017 National Championship was senior Billy McKenzie. McKenzie tied for sixth at the championship. He shot 11-over par 295 (71-76-70-78). With his finish, McKenzie was named to the 2017 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship All-Tournament Team.
David Houlding came in second for the Owls as he finished 23rd overall with a score of 20-over par 304 (69-76-76-83) over the four rounds. Houlding struggled on the final day as he shot his worst round of the championship.
Junior, Jack Clarkson finished the tournament 21-over par 305 (77-78-71-79) to finish tied for 26th. After a slow start on the front nine, Clarkson carded eight pars and one bogey on the back nine to shoot his eight-over par 79 for the fourth round.
Rounding out the scorers for the Owls were Mark Martin and Matt Wells. Martin finished tied for 74th while Wells finished tied for 78th. Martin shot nine-over par 80 in the fourth round. He finished the championship 37-over par 321 (81-85-75-80). Wells shot a final round of eight-over par 79. He was 39-over par 323 (80-86-78-79) for the championship.
