NORMAN, OKLA., August 26, 2016 – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s golf team begins the 2016-17 season ranked No. 16 in the Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Preseason Poll.
Under the direction of eighth-year head coach Troy Halterman, the Tritons begin their quest for a fourth straight NCAA appearance on September 6 at the annual Arch Cup at the Country Club at the Legends in Eurkea, Mo.
UMSL is coming off fifth NCAA Regional appearance in the last six years and its second straight GLVC Championship. The Tritons claimed a school record six tournament titles during the 2015-16 campaign, while also placing in the top four in 12 of its 14 events, earning two runner-up finishes. UMSL also posted a school record single season scoring average of 296.94.
Halterman, the two-time reigning GLVC and Midwest Region Coach of the Year, returns three All-GLVC players, including senior Julien de Poyen, junior Markus Lindberg and sophomoreJames Henderson.
De Poyen was second in scoring average at 74.47 a year. He recorded six top-10 finishes, winning the Frito Lay/All-State Intercollegiate, and set a single season record with six eagles. de Poyen enters his senior season ranked fourth in career scoring (75.48).
Lindberg posted a team-best 73.91 scoring average, breaking the program’s previous single season record of 74.18, en route to earning DII PING Honorable Mention All-America honors. He recorded seven top-10 finishes, including earning medalist honors at the Brickyard Crossing Intercollegiate. Lindberg also recorded two runner-up finishes, including at the Las Vegas Desert Classic, where he set a program 54-hole record with a seven under-par 209. Additionally, Lindberg set single season records for rounds of par or better (12) and birdies (113). He will enter his junior campaign ranked first on the program’s career scoring (75.04) list.
Henderson moved into the varsity line-up for the final four events of the year and posted a team third-best 74.68 scoring average. He also competed in four events as an individual, earning a tie for fourth place finish at the Frito Lay/All-State Intercollegiate.
UMSL will play in six tournaments this fall, which includes hosting the Midwest Regional onOct. 10-11 at Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka, Mo., and trips to Florida and Texas.
The Tritons will compete in an additional six events during the spring season, which includes trips to South Carolina, Alabama, Las Vegas and Florida.
