UMSL Men’s Golf Finishes First in Stroke Play at GLVC Championships, Earns No. 1 Seed in Match Play

SPRINGFIELD, ILL., April 18, 2016 – The No. 18 ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s golf team is one step closer to defending its Great Lakes Valley Conference championship, earning the top seed in tomorrow’s match play after finishing first in the 54-hole stroke play.

The Tritons posted a 54-hole school record team score of 863, carding rounds of 290, 283 and 290, finishing five strokes ahead of second place Indianapolis (289-286-293 – 868) in the 14-team field. UMSL will face Illinois Springfield in tomorrow’s semifinal at 8 a.m., while UIndy will face Bellarmine. Bellarmine was third in the team standings (284-290-301 – 875), while UIS was fourth (288-301-287 – 876).

The winners of the two semifinals will meet in the afternoon to play for the GLVC team title. The Tritons are in match play for the fourth straight year.

Freshman James Henderson led the Tritons individually with a tie for third place finish, earning All-GLVC honors for his top five finish. The second half of the 10-member squad along with the major postseason awards, including Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year will be determined by a coaches’ vote in the coming weeks. Henderson, who played in his first varsity tournament just the other week, turned in a score of 213, tying the third best individual 54-hole score in program history with rounds of 75, 68 and 70.

Junior Julien de Poyen also secured All-GLVC honors for the second straight year, finishing in a tie for fifth place with his score of 215 (69-73-73).

Indianapolis’ Graham McAree was crowned GLVC medalist for his five-under par 211 (75-70-66), finishing one stroke better than runner-up James Inman of Bellarmine (69-72-71).

Also for UMSL, senior Colby Yates had his best finish in four years at the GLVC Championships, tying for eighth place with a score of 217 (75-70-72), while sophomore Markus Lindberg tied for 11th place with a score of 218 (71-72-75). Senior Anthony Cope rounded out the scoring with a 223 (75-73-75).
