Three Men’s Golfers Participate in British Amateur

The William Woods University Men’s Golf Team had three players, Alasdair McDougall<http://wwuowls.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1633>, Billy McKenzie<http://wwuowls.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1634> and David Houlding<http://wwuowls.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1628>, participated in the 121st Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl and Pyle & Kenfig. The first stage of the Championship involves 288 players each of whom plays two rounds of 18 holes, one to be played on each of the two courses.

The 64 lowest scores over the 36 holes and ties for 64th place will compete in the match play stage of the Championship. Each match will consist of one round of 18 holes except the Final which will be over 36 holes.

McDougall led the way as he was finished second in stroke play. During the first round of stroke play, recorded four birdies and one eagle in the round to shoot a two-under par 69. He continued his strong play during the second round, with five birdies but had three bogeys and he shot two-under for the second straight for a four-under par 138 (69-69).

In the second round of the match play part of the championship, McDougall defeated Jamie Li in the nineteenth hole advancing to the third round. McDougall was knocked out as he was defeated 4&2 by Ewen Ferguson.

McKenzie finished 34th after stroke play as he shot three-over par 145 (67-78). In the first round, McKenzie scored five birdies and one bogey to shoot four-under par 67. However, the second round did not go as planned as he shot 78 (seven-over par) for the round. He finished three-over par for the tournament.

Like McDougall, McKenzie won his first match play match of the tournament. In the second round, McKenzie defeated Jonathan Goth-Rasmussen 3&1 advancing to the third round. In the third round, McKenzie was knocked out in the 21st hole of his match by Alejandro Del Rey.

Houlding, missed the cut to make match play as he finished tied for 170th at the Amateur Championship. Houlding shot 11-over par 153 (75-78) for the tournament. In the first round, Houlding was four-over par, 75 and seven-over par 78 in the second round.
