Brad Nurski shot a one-under-par 141 and shares the medalist spot in the qualifying rounds at the US Mid-Amateur champiionship at Saucon Valley CC in Pennsylvania. The 35-year-old from St. Joseph is one of Missouri’s most accomplished mid-ams and the winner of the Missouri Amateur in 2010. Nurski has the #2 seed as he begins the match play portion of the championship today (Sept. 8).
Nurski qualified for the national event by grabbing the first of two available spots at a July 30th qualifier on his home course, St. Joseph CC. Alex Downing of Lee’s Summit, MO got the second spot that day and also made match play at Saucon Valley with a 150 total and the 58th seed. Downing will play 2013 Walker Cupper Todd White in his first match. White and Nathan Smith were the mid-amateur captain’s picks in 2013 by St. Louisan Jim Holtgrieve and earned the tying and clinching points in singles in the US win over GB&I at the National Golf Links.
The other area qualifier offered four spots to the Mid-Am on August 5th at Annbriar GC in Waterloo, IL. Andy Roberts of Owensboro, KY earned one of those spots and shot 147 to earn the 22nd seed in today’s round of 64 matches.
Three additional qualifiers from Annbriar, B.W. Bruce, Derek Meinhardt, and Brian Haskell missed qualifying at Saucon Valley.
Nurski was recently voted one of the three players on the Missouri team at the upcoming US State Team championship at the French Lick Resort September 30-Oct 2. Missouri’s other players in that event are St. Louisans Skip Berkmeyer and Phil Caravia.
