The University of Illinois golf team advanced into the match play semifinals in the NCAA DI golf championships with a 3-2 win over UCLA  in the quarterfinals at Concession GC in Florida. Unfortunately, they fell 3-2 to the USC team in the afternoon semifinals and are thus eliminated from competition. Illinois head coach Mike Small said, “That’s match play for you. Sometimes the higher seed doesn’t win.” (Illinois was the #1 seed in the match play bracket and UCLA was the #8 seed.) USC will meet the team from LSU in Wednesday’s finals. (LSU defeated the Georgia team in the semis.)

Illinois was seeking to become the only #1 seed to win the Championship since the match play format was introduced in 2009. ( Only the top eight teams qualify for match play, and they are seeded 1 through 8 based on their finish in the stroke play part of the competition.)
