Central Missouri Mules Golf got their season underway Monday and Tuesday with The Mule Invitational, their home tournament at Mules National Golf Course in Warrensburg. In a tight team battle, the Mules took second place by a stroke.
UCM shot a +6, 846 for 54 holes. The Mules and Ichabods were locked up most of the final day and how the two performed on hole 18 proved to be the difference. The Mules also had a second team in the tournament which took third place shooting a +12, 852.
The second place team was led by Cole Dillon who was three-under-par with a 207. Dillon was below par in two of the three rounds with a 68 in rounds one and three and a 71 in round two.
Following Dillon on his team was Nick Westrich. Westrich was one-over-par with a 211. He shot a +1, 71 in rounds one and three and a -1, 69 in round two and finished in a tie for 10th place. Two strokes behind Westrich was Matt Hoemann who carded a +3, 215 and was tied for 14th place. Hoemann had a low round of one-under, 69 in round three. He shot a +1, 71 and +3, 73 in the first two rounds.
John Bonaobra and Kaden Macha made up the rest of the team. Bonaobra tied for 24th place with a five-over-par 215 and Macha tied for 55th at +11, 221. Bonaobra had a good first day with a +1, 71 and even-par 70. He shot four-over par in round three. Macha was consistent throughout the three rounds with two rounds of +4, 74 and one of +3, 73.
Sam Parrott tied for fourth place overall and was the top finisher on the Mules third place team. He finished at -2, 208 with rounds of 68, 69 and 71.
Brett Windsor also made the top-10 tying for eighth place with an even-par 210. Windsor had UCM’s best round with a -4, 66 in the opening round. He followed that up with a 71 and 73.
Ian Barnes, Carter Tumminia and J.D. Pedersen filled out the rest of the card. Barnes tied for 18th at +4, 214, Tumminia was tied for 47th at +10, 220 and Pedersen shot a +17, 227 and tied for 76th place.
Five different Mules shared the team lead with 11 birdies: Barnes, Bonaobra, Dillon, Parrott and Bennett Tifenbrunn, who played as an individual. Hoemann hit par on 41 holes and Bonaobra was the only Mule to card an eagle. Parrott had the best score out of 100 individuals on par-4 holes. He totaled a -6 and averaged 3.75 for three rounds.
The Mules were best on the longer holes. Their par-4 holes totaled one-under par and they were nine-under on par-five holes
Washburn won the team title with a +5, 845. Craig Stefureak from Drury was the individual winner after a one-hole playoff. He shot a -7, 203 for 54 holes.
UCM plays again next week, Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 17-18 at the Northeastern State Men’s Golf Classic.
