Mules Golf finishes fifth at D-II National Preview Tournament

DENVER, Colo. — Playing the course that will host next spring’s NCAA Division II National Tournament, the fifth-ranked Mules Golf team came in fifth place out of 22 teams at the Division II National Preview at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. The field of 22 teams featured eight teams ranked in GCAA Top 25 Poll and an additional four teams that are receiving votes in the poll.

The Mules shot rounds of 291, 285 and 292 to finish at four-over par as a team and in fifth place. Eighth-ranked Chico State blitzed the field with a team score of 20-under par to win the tournament by 13 strokes over fourth ranked Barry and top-ranked and defending national champion Nova Southeastern, who tied for second at seven-under par. 10th-ranked Cal State-Monterey Bay was fourth at five-under par with the Mules nine shots back in fifth.

Alex Springer was the top placing Mule in a tie for 14th place at two-under par. He shot a final round 71 on the par 72 course. Travis Mays was three-over par in the final round and finished at one-over for the tournament and tied for 23rd.

Teddy Jones and Travis Simmons finished in a tie for 39th place at five-over par 221. Jones shot 73, 73, 75, while Simmons carded 74, 71 and 76 for the tournament. Brett Windsor finished tied for 78th at 12-over par, 228. He shot 76 and 81 in the first two rounds before a one-under par 71 in Tuesday’s third and final round.

Alistair Docherty of Chico State carded three straight rounds of 69 to finish at nine-under par for the tournament and took home individual medalist honors by two shots over Juan Jose Guerra (Nova Southeastern), Niclas Weiland (Barry), Zach Tripp (Colorado-Colo. Springs) and Matt Hutchins (Chico State).

The Mules are back in action Oct. 5-6 at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Fall Invitational at The Jewell Golf Club in Lake City, Minnesota.
