Mules Golf fired a final round 292, 12-over par, and ran away with the team title at the Fort Hays State Tiger Classic at Smoky Hill Country Club. The Mules finished the 54-hole tournament at 12-over par, 29 shots ahead of second place Lindenwood.
Alex Springer followed up his record-setting second round score of 61 with a one-over par 71 in the final round. He claimed the individual title finished the tournament at two-under par. Shayne Allan shot a final round 73 and finished in second place at five-over par.
The Mules had two players entered in the tournament as individuals, Brett Windsor and John Bonaobra. Windsor finished tied for ninth at 10-over par after a final round 75. Bonoabra was 19-over par after shooting a 79 on Wednesday. He finished tied for 29th.
With the win, the Mules move into first place in the MIAA season-long points standings. UCM has 30 points through three events, 1.5 points ahead of second place Central Oklahoma. Team points in next week’s MIAA Championships are doubled so UCM will need to beat or tie with Central Oklahoma to claim the MIAA Regular Season Championship.
With his tournament victory, Springer also moves in to first place in the individual standings with 36.5 points.
The MIAA Championships begin next Monday, April 24 and run through Wednesday, April 26 at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course in Spring Hill, Kan. The 54-hole tournament will be played over three days with 18 holes being completed each day.
