Mizzou Men’s Golf Makes Wednesday Push, Places Eighth at NCAA Regionals

Share

The University of Missouri men’s golf team had a strong third-round showing at the NCAA Raleigh Regional Wednesday, but it wasn’t quite enough to advance to the upcoming NCAA Championships.  The Tigers turned in their best round of the regional today, shooting a seven-under par 277 team score, but their three-day total of 840 tied for eighth in the field, leaving them just six shots shy of fifth-place and 21st-ranked Arizona State (834) with only the top five teams advancing from the 14-team field to nationals.

Senior Hayden Buckley (Belden, Miss.) finished tied for fifth place individually with a three-round score of 204 (69-69-66), and missed by the slimmest of margins from advancing individually.  He fired a five-under par 66 Wednesday to put him in a three-man playoff with Pontus Nyholm of Campbell University and Marcus Byrd of Middle Tennessee State to determine the sole individual to move on.

In the playoff, Buckley birdied the par-five first hole, but so did both competitors, and after all three players parred the par-three eighth, it came down to the par-four ninth.  Nyholm won the hole with a birdie to knock Buckley and Byrd out of contention.

The playoff defeat didn’t put a damper on Buckley’s amazing third round.  He shot a four-under 31 on the front, and closed with birdies on 15 and 17 to force himself into the playoff mix.  Buckley ended his stellar Mizzou career having won four tournaments in his senior season, which earned him a place on the All-SEC First Team by league coaches, and a spot on the watch list for the Haskins Award, which goes annually to the nation’s top collegiate golfer.

A pair of underclassmen buoyed Head Coach Mark Leroux‘s squad, as sophomore Rory Franssen (Inverness, Scotland) and freshman Jamie Stewart (Renfrewshire, Scotland) came in tied for 32nd overall, thanks to identical three-day totals of 212 (one-under for the tournament).  Franssen fired a two-under 69 on Wednesday, while Stewart shot a one-over 72 for the second-straight round, following an opening-round 68 on Monday.

Mizzou’s only other senior in the lineup – Trevor Ullestad (Jewell, Iowa) tied for 45th place individually with a one-over par 214 total, after rounds of 72, 70 and 72.  Junior Matt Echelmeier (Columbia, Mo.), who was the team’s alternate each of the first two days, was inserted into the lineup Wednesday, and he responded nicely with a one-under par 70.
