The low 64 players are now set and match play begins at 8 am today at the Missouri Amateur at Buffalo Ridge GC. There was a 7 for 5 playoff last night at 150 to get to the low 64.
Brevin Giebler of Cape Girardeau and 1996 Amateur Champion Wayne Fredrick of Springfield shared medalist honors at five under 135. Giebler gets the #1 seed by virtue of being the first to post his 135 on Tuesday. He was also the medalist in 2012 when the Amateur was held at his home club, Dalhousie GC in Cape.
Missouri Golf Association Executive Director Scott Hovis said, “We at the MGA and the players certainly enjoyed the stroke play portion over the Buffalo Ridge, Springs course, and I’m sure the course and the players will provide plenty of excitement in the match play portion as we will determine the 2015 Champion on Sunday. Buffalo Ridge lays out perfectly for match play ups and downs as we work our way from 64 players to two in the 36 hole finals on Sunday.”
The 2013 and 2014 Champion, Joey Johnson from Ozark, MO and Missouri State U., faces off against Mizzou commit Matt Echelmeier of Rock Bridge HS in Columbia in one of today’s feature matches.
The qualifying field features plenty of college players and three in the +50 senior set–Steve Groom of Raytown, Scott Edwards of St. Louis, and Ron Eilers of Columbia. The latter was one of the five players to survive the playoff at 150.
Matt Wills made what we think was the sixth ace in Missouri Amateur history on the seventh hole at Buffalo Ridge yesterday.
The schedule calls for the round of 64 today and two rounds tomorrow morning and afternoon as the Championship works its way to Sunday’s 36 hole final. Admission at Buffalo Ridge, Springs is free.
