John Anderson of Norwood Hills was one of the few players to solve Westwood CC on Friday with a three-under 68 and a slim two shot lead at 139 over several pursuers heading into the final day of the 24th Metropolitan Am. Anderson offset three bogeys with six birdies on Westwood’s tricky greens for the day’s low round. He will go off Saturday morning in the final pairing with a two stroke lead over Joe Migdal who is at 141. Also two behind are Skip Berkmeyer and first day leader Patrick Reardon who both came back to the pack Friday with a 73 and 75 respectively. Kyle Weldon is lurking three shots back at even par and Phil Caravia and Chris Kovach are another shot behind at 143. Caravia, coming off his win at the St. Louis District Championship last Sunday, fired a two-under 69 on Friday and appears in good form–and thus dangerous. Weldon is attempting to win his third consecutive Metropolitan Amateur.
The final twosome goes off shortly after 10 this morning. We should see some fireworks today as Anderson attempts to maintain his lead and win his first Metropolitan Am. The large field was cut to a low 40 and ties at 151 after round two.
