Memorial Day at Porto Cima

Memorial Day Weekend 2015:

Have you ever wanted to play golf at The Club at Porto Cima? Myself and a few colleagues have, and we finally got an opportunity to make it happen last month.   Getting a chance to tee it up at the Lake of the Ozarks is always fun, but this round was a bit more special than most. The Club at Porto Cima is quite a sight to see, and to say the course was in great shape would be an understatement.

Porto Cima Par 3

Porto Cima Front Nine

After careful thought, we had a foursome of good friends and golf nuts assembled that were sure to enjoy what Porto Cima had to offer. The entire drive to the Lake from Columbia we talked about all the things we had heard and or read about the golf course. “The key to a good score is the first five holes.   Take less than driver out of the bag on the tight driving holes. Get yourself in the right position on the greens to avoid the dreaded three-putt.” All these things would prove to be true, but we had to see it ourselves to know for sure. Upon arrival, it was no surprise that everything from the clubhouse to the driving range facility was first class. The staff was friendly, personable, and very accommodating. They told us some “must knows’ about the course, and then sent us on our way. After a brief warm up session, we all hit a few putts and were on our way to the first tee.

The first hole at the Club at Porto Cima is not an easy one. It requires a straight drive off the tee, and then an accurate approach to a large green. After a few good shots from our group and eventually 3 pars, the nerves were eased some and the enjoyment really set in. We began each hole by looking around at the beautiful sights and sounds of the Ozarks and also by talking a bit of strategy as to where we should try and hit our shots. Each hole more impressive than the last, we quickly realized this was the bar that other lake courses were trying to reach. The tee boxes were all perfectly manicured, and the greens rolled as true as any we’d ever been on. Those things coupled with breathtaking views of the course, the lake, and some extraordinary homes made our trip to Porta Cima unforgettable.

Rick Teeing Off

In making the turn we thought we should run into the clubhouse and try to grab a quick bite to eat for lunch. However, before we could get back to the clubhouse we drove past a cabana set up near the range where all sorts of lunch options were being grilled. Needless to say, we stopped and enjoyed an excellent BBQ lunch in the shade without having to feel rushed, or go inside the club house to make our order. There were bratwurst, burgers, chicken breast and a few other options to choose from off the grill. This was a wonderful touch on an already outstanding day.

Porto Cima Back Nine

With our bellies full, we got back to the golf and number ten was an inviting par 4 in which you could go for the green if you wanted to. This hole proved to be a bit of a confidence booster and a jumpstart to the back nine. One player in our group nailed a 3 wood onto the fringe and would go on to make an easy birdie to get his back nine under way in style. As much as we enjoyed the front nine, the back was somehow even better. The water become more in play on the back, and some of the views were simply incredible. We got to number 15, the signature hole, and had to take some pictures. On this par 5, the fairway eventually narrows and leads you to a green that is virtually in the Lake of the Ozarks. Thankfully, no one walked away with worse than par, so it was all smiles from our group as we went on to the next hole.

We finished our round in style, enjoyed a cold beer on the deck of the clubhouse and watched a few other groups finish up. It was a round that none of us will be forgetting anytime soon, and frankly one of the nicest tracks any of us have ever stepped foot on. Whether it’s just for a getaway, conducting business or anything in between, our group has a hard time thinking you’ll find somewhere better than the Club at Porto Cima to take your friends, family, or clients on a golf outing that is sure to impress. This was truly a wonderful day at a world class golf course, and it couldn’t come any more highly recommended.
