University of Missouri-St. Louis Director of Golf Operations Troy Halterman has announced the signing of Juan Antonio Padilla (Ramos Arizpe, Mexico), Carson Postal (St. Louis, Mo.) and Joel Sylen (Falkenberg, Sweden) to national letters of intent to join the Tritons’ men’s golf program beginning with the 2018-19 academic year.
Padilla is a three-time player with the National Team in Junior America’s Cup and was champion of the Tour Championships of Texas Junior Golf. He also earned a third-place finish in an AJGA Open event. During the 2014-15 season, he was the Mexican Ranking champion.
“Tony is already a very accomplished player,” Halterman said. “He is ranked #10 for international players in the class of 2018 and is ranked #100 for the class of 2018 in the world by Junior Golf Scoreboard. He played a very tough schedule this season, which was highlighted by his strong play in the AJGA events. Those are national events in the USA and he consistently finished near the top of the board. Tony is a very accurate player with a strong short game. He is very tough mentally and will be ready to compete from day one.”
Postal preps at Kirkwood High School where he enters his senior season as a three-time state qualifier. A three-time all-conference selection, he was named the conference player of the year as a junior and owned a 2.8 nine-hole average. Other golf accomplishments include: 2017 Junior PGA Championship qualifier, second place finish at the 2016 Little Pepsi Little Peoples Championship, fifth place at the 2016 MGA Junior Amateur, fifth place at the 2016 US Junior Amateur Qualifier, top 20 finish at the 2017 US Amateur Qualifier and second place finish at the 2016 Hurricane Tour Event.
“We are excited to add one of the top players in St. Louis from the class of 2018,” said Halterman. “Recruiting locally and regionally is always a high priority for us and we are excited to add Carson this year. He is a good golfer, a good student, and an even better person. His experience comes from local, regional and national events. Carson has consistently shown he is one of the top players in Missouri as he was ranked #5 in the state for the class of 2018 by Junior Golf Scoreboard.”
Sylen plays in Sweden where he ranks eighth in his age group. He won three Junior Master Invitational tournaments last year and finished second in the JMI finals (68-68-69).
“We believe Joel is one of the top players in Sweden in his class,” said Halterman. “He has really come on strong late in the season in some really big events. He also earned full exempt status on the Nordea Professional Tour in Sweden, which is a huge accomplishment for an amateur. This means he can compete against the top pros in his area all next summer. Joel has great fundamentals and is an excellent ball striker.”
