Monday at Bellerive CC 50 teams competed in better ball play for the three available spots in the first USGA Four-Ball Championship to be held next May at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. The wind strengthened as the day went on and made club selection and scoring difficult as the teams played into the early afternoon.
The Four-Ball Championship takes the place of the US Publinks Championships for men and women beginning in 2015.
The newly-crowned 2014 US Mid-Amateur Champion, Scott Harvey of Kernersville, NC, teamed with Todd Mitchell of Bloomington, IL to shoot a dazzling bogey-free 64 on the demanding Bellerive layout and win medalist honors. Harvey-Mitchell and Brian Craig -John Ehrgott were the only two teams in the field to complete their round without a bogey. St. Joseph’s Brad Nurski, the loser in the Mid-Amateur final match to Harvey, paired with fellow Missourian Skip Berkmeyer to nab second at 66. Nurski said, ” After a slow start,we finally woke up and went six-under-par on holes 4 through 8 (their 13th -17th holes). I eagled 4, Skip birdied 5 and 6, I birdied 7 and we both birdied 8. The bogey at 9 (their 18th) was disappointing but I’m glad 66 was good enough to get us in.”
The third sport was nabbed by Chicagoans Michael Affeldt and Eric Ciotti with the only par 4 on Bellerive’s difficult 10th hole in a four team playoff among teams who finished at four-under 67. For complete results go to www.metga.org
