St. Louisans Scott Edwards and Craig Hardcastle, both standouts on the local senior golf scene, nabbed the two available spots today for the 2014 US Senior Am in qualifying at Glen Echo CC. They shot two over 73s, along with Jim Dunn, and bested Dunn in the 3 for 2 playoff. Edwards made a nice par on the first playoff hole, the 18th at Glen Echo, to secure his spot. Craig and Jim made bogey on the 18th and parred the next playoff hole, the 1st, and headed back to 18 again. Dunn was forced to take an unplayable lie after his third shot finished under the lip of a greeside bunker on 18, so Hardcastle was free to lag his first putt for par and secure the second spot in the national tournament at Big Canyon CC in Newport Beach September 13-18.
Edwards and Hardcastle won over a good field of 33 players, including a number from out of state. Ron Eilers, Dee Sanders, Mike Hartman, and Mark McClain tied at 74 with Sanders getting the 2nd alternate spot.
Several players noted that “the course was there for the taking” today because of the soft greens that require a fair bit of water in these hot and windy conditions. But obviously par was a good score on many holes as nary a player could put two sub-par nines together on the tricky Glen Echo greens.
