Cougars Golf Teams Compete at Virginia McCoy Intercollegiate

Parkville, Mo. – The Columbia College women’s golf team moved up one spot to No. 6 during Tuesday’s final round of the Virginia McCoy Intercollegiate, after improving their score by 10 strokes. They posted a two-day score of 744 at the conclusion of the tournament at The Deuce at The National Golf Club of Kansas City.

The Columbia men held on to its third-place spot after the second day, finishing seven shots out of second place, with a 609.

Columbia WOMEN’S GOLF – 6th PLACE
The Columbia women’s team shot an opening-round 377, then posted a final-round 367 to finish 168-over-par with a 744 in the two-day affair.

Iowa Western CC won the event with an 85-over-par 661, followed by Ottawa University, which was 23 strokes behind Iowa Western, with a 684. Truman State fell from second to third and shot a 687, while Park University was fourth with a 691.

Other team finishers included Fort Hays State (708) in fifth, Lyon College (756) in seventh, Iowa Central CC (764) in eighth, Park University (B) (783) placing ninth and Fontbonne University (884) placing tenth.

Columbia’s Kasey Nichols (SO/Rocheport,Mo.) led the Cougars after tying in 18th place with a two-day score of 179. She posted a 90 on the opening day and an 89 in the final round. Laken Frese (JR/Quincy, Ill.) tied in 26th place with a score 184. She improved her score by two strokes (93-91) on the second day. Claire McDonald (FR/Columbia, Mo.) tied for 34th after shooting 96 on the first day and 92 on the final day for a two-day score of 188. Mikayla Knaebel(JR/Jefferson City, Mo) was 38th overall with a two-day score of 193.

Columbia MEN’S GOLF – 3rd PLACE
The Columbia men’s team shot an opening-round 301, then posted a final-round 308 to finish 33-over-par with a two-day score of 609.

Lindenwood-Belleville posted a 6-over-par 582 to capture the men’s championship. The Lindenwood-Belleville ‘B’ team came in second with a 26-over-par 602. Iowa Western CC placed fourth with a 37-over-par 609, while Ottawa University came in fifth, Iowa Central CC shot a 631 for sixth, Fontbonne finished in seventh with a two-day score of 640 and Lyon College claimed eight with a two-day score of 648.

Columbia’s Ben Charles (FR/ West Plains, Mo.) led the Cougars with a two-day score of 147 (73-74, +3) for fifth place.  Zach Rockers (SR/Centertown, Mo.) tied for 11th place after shooting 74 the first day and 78 the final day. Trevor Cronin (FR/St. Louis, Mo.) placed 15th overall 154 (75-79, +10), Erik Peyton (JR/ Lake Saint Louis, Mo.) tied for 17th(79-78, +13), and Brandon Bowman (SR/ Kansas City, Mo.) placed 36th (81-84, +21).

The Columbia squads will continue their spring season Monday and Tuesday, April 20-21, when they participate in the Central Methodist Spring Invitational held at Hail Ridge Golf Club in Booneville, Mo.
