Mizzou Women’s Golf launched the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in style, posting its best team round of the season and finishing the opening day of the tournament in first place.
The Tigers carded a 13-under-par 275 and lead second-place UNLV by two strokes following 18 holes of action. The 275 is the third-lowest 18-hole team round in program history and the lowest round since Mizzou carded a 274 in the fall of 2015.
“It was a great start for us today,” head coach Stephanie Priesmeyer said. “We couldn’t have asked for better scoring conditions & the team really took advantage of the day.”
Junior Emma Allen continued a strong fall campaign with a career-low 7-under 65, which matches the best 18-hole round by an individual in program history. She is just third Tiger ever to shoot a 65 in a single round.
Allen is currently in first place among a field of 96 competitors after the opening round. She has now recorded four sub-70 rounds so far during the 2017 fall season.
“Emma was driving the ball fantastic and she was spot on with her distance control and with her approach shots,” Priesmeyer said. “She was definitely seeing the line much better today on the greens and that resulted in some nice birdies for her.”
Senior Clara Young is tied for sixth place through 18 holes after carding a 4-under-par 68. Sunday’s performance is a season-low for Young and marks just the second time in her career that she has shot a 68 or lower in a round.
Sophomore Jessica Yuen sits tied for ninth after 18 holes. She recorded a 3-under-par 69, giving her three sub-70 rounds during the 2017 fall season and five in her career.
In her first career start, sophomore Cherise Otter carded a 73. She has now recorded four consecutive rounds of 73 or lower.
Mizzou continues play at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Monday with 18 holes beginning at 10 a.m. CT via shotgun start.
