The 2015 Missouri Amateur is almost here and MGA Executive Director Scott Hovis says he’s “very excited” to be going to Buffalo Ridge GC in Branson for the Championship. (Buffalo Ridge was called Branson Creek before it was purchased by Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops and the force behind the Legends of Golf partner event on the Champions Tour. It was won this year by Billy Andrade and Joe Durant.)
The MGA has held four qualifiers at different sites around the state, and the “last chance” qualifier is this Friday at Oak Meadow in Rolla where the entrants will play for the final four spots into the field. Four past champions will be playing this year–Chuck Greene, Wayne Fredrick, Ben Godwin, and, of course, the champion from 2013 AND 2014, Joey Johnson (pictured above) from Ozark, MO and Missouri State U.
The field of 144 will compete in two rounds of stroke play qualifying at Buffalo Ridge, then the top 64 qualifiers will go into match play to determine the champion.
Can Johnson win an unprecedented three in a row? It’s tough enough to repeat, and no one has had a “three-peat” in the 100+ years of the Championship.
The event is June 23-28, and you can follow with the 2015 Missouri Amateur here or at mogolf.org.
